‘Serving God, Serving Sutton’
We have a number of community friendship groups collectively referred to as “The Friends of St Mary’s”. These groups offer a wide range of fun and interesting activities for all within a friendly and convivial atmosphere. They also work closely with the community to support local charities and people in need
There is a long-standing choral tradition at St Mary's. We have a mixed 4-part Choir that sings a wide range of church music: from traditional to modern. Our only criterion is that the music is well written, enjoyable to sing and compliments our worship to the Glory of God.
We sing at the main service at 10.00am on a Sunday morning. We vary our sung Communion music to reflect the richness and beauty of the church seasons. We regularly sing Anthems to reflect the times of the year. On the third Sunday of each month at 9.45am we sing full Choral Matins.
Our Services are accompanied on our 1907 Pipe Organ which has served St Mary’s Church for over 100 years. We also sing at weddings, the annual Civic Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade and at the other important 'Holy Days'. The Choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music and some of our members have been awarded the Bishop's Award for Long Service. Like most Choirs, we always welcome new members, particularly boys and girls from the age of eight upwards.
We select Hymns and Songs from three Hymn books which allows a selection of beautiful hymns from across the ages to compliment our modern Catholic tradition.
Mothers' Union is an international Christian membership charity of over 4 million members living in 84 countries, who share one heartfelt vision - to bring about a world where God's love is shown through loving, respectful and flourishing relationships.
Members actively pursue this vision through community programmes, advocacy campaigns and a committed prayer life.
Our members are not all mothers; women and men of all ages and backgrounds who share in our worthy purpose are welcome to join as members. We also welcome visitors to our meetings wherever the topic may be of interest. If you’re interested in joining us or attending one of our meetings then please click here for more information and a list of programme events.
Do you sometimes feel alone? Do you wish you could meet with other people, who maybe feel as you do? Would you like to see a friendly face, someone who you could talk to -
share a memory with - even a tear,
maybe even a joke.
Then why not come along to our FRIENDSHIP GROUP? We meet on the Second and Fourth Tuesday of every month at 1.30pm in the Magdalene Centre.
As the name suggests this is a group for the men of the church, and those who visit the church only occasionally. We have speakers on a variety of subjects from gardening to jet engines and vintage cars, and afterwards share a pint (or two) in the bar. We organise several trips and 2-3 meals out during the year - which are open to other people. In the summer we organise an outing which is also open to anyone wishing to attend, this year we visited the working port of Hull. We organise the flowers for the Mothering Sunday service and we help with churchyard clean-up which happens twice a year. We’re a friendly group and you will be most welcome to come along and join in any of the activities. We meet at 8pm on the first Friday in each month in the Magdalene centre.
We have eight bells at St Mary’s. The oldest bell in the tower is 352 years old and the two youngest were installed in 1919 to commemorate the ending of the First World War. The bells are rung every Sunday for morning service and we practice most Tuesdays from 6:15-7:30pm. We’re always looking for new people so if you’re interested then come along and have a go, you’ll know when we’re there - just listen!!. We also ring for Weddings, Christenings and Funerals when requested.
A recent addition is a set of eight Hand Bells (one octave). The team is in its infancy but we hope to begin ringing practices soon and people of all ages are welcome. The aim is to ring during occasional Sunday Services and at other special events.
Are you widowed or single? We are a friendly bunch who meet for lunch on the 4th Sunday of the month at a local hostelry and share lifts.
The cost of the meal is about £10.
If you are interested in joining us ring Rosemarie Poffley on 01623 555585
For well filled plate and brimming cup and freedom from the washing up! We thank you, Lord. Amen.
Started at the late St Modwen’s Church on Station Road in 1966, we have speakers on a wide variety of subjects, also quiz nights, faith suppers and a winter and summer outing with dinner. Twice a year we have a fundraising evening, one for the church and one to support other charities.
We have two meetings a month on a Wednesday evening from 7:30 - 9:30pm in the Magdalene Centre. For further information please contact us.
Come and join us in the Magdalene Centre most Sundays from 9:00pm - 11:00pm.
You’ll always be made very welcome.
